The most valuable thing a trip can offer you is not an itinerary. It’s the space to abandon it for a while<\/a>. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There is a moment that appears on almost every trip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Usually in a square.<\/span><\/p>\n

People move without haste. Someone stops in front of a shop window. A couple sits on a bench without speaking. Somewhere further away, a musician tries out a melody no one asked for, yet two or three people stop to listen. <\/span><\/p>\n

And among them, a group starts walking.<\/span><\/p>\n

In front, an umbrella.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s a familiar image. Perhaps even misunderstood. <\/span><\/p>\n

Because the umbrella doesn’t symbolize the wrong way to travel. It symbolizes something much more human: the need to know that we are in the <\/span>right place, at the right time<\/span><\/a>, seeing what we “must” see.<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s nothing wrong with that. Everyone, at some point, needs it. <\/span><\/p>\n

Only, places don’t remember our <\/span>itineraries<\/span><\/a>. They continue to live among the sights.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a bookstore you entered only to escape the heat, and left with a book you never intended to read. In a courtyard no travel guide mentioned, but someone left the door open and for a moment you felt invited. In a sudden rain that forced you to enter somewhere nameless, just to dry off. <\/span><\/p>\n

Strange, but the most vivid memories of a trip are rarely born when you chase them. They are born when there is space for something unpredictable to interrupt you; a movement, a phrase in another language you understood without speaking it, a door that opened at the wrong moment and let you see something not meant for you. <\/span><\/p>\n

The real umbrella test is not whether you will follow it.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s whether you will ever feel, even for a few minutes, the need to leave it behind. Not because the other path is better. But because, at that moment, something pulled you there without asking permission, and that, however unplanned, was truly yours. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
