There’s a difference between what we saw and what truly became ours.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

There’s a phrase heard in almost every trip preparation: “I want to see as much as possible.”<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s perfectly logical. Time is limited, the world is vast, and you don’t want to waste a single day of your precious vacation. No one wants to return feeling like they left something “out.” This is how an itinerary is born: two cities in four days, three islands in one week, stops arranged like appointments that cannot be delayed. <\/span><\/p>\n

In practice, however, memory doesn’t work with an itinerary. It doesn’t record what passed before our eyes. It records what we managed to see again, to get used to, to recognize the second or third time. <\/span><\/p>\n

A place needs time to transition from an “impression” to a “memory,” and this time cannot be compressed, no matter how much we wish it could. This is ultimately what we mean by slow travel: giving each place the conditions<\/a> and the time it needs to imprint itself on you, even if it means seeing less. To recognize, on the second day, a path that seemed random on the first. To distinguish a sound before seeing what causes it. To remember what time a neighborhood is quieter, not because a guide told you, but because you noticed it yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n

When movement is constant, the opposite happens. The traveler is constantly in between: half has arrived, the other half is ready to leave. They accumulate images, but don’t truly live in the destination. They return with the feeling of having seen a lot, and with the silent difficulty of clearly reconstructing it when someone asks how it was. The photos will confirm they were there. The memory itself, often, will not. The moments truly existed, they just didn’t have time to become more than moments. <\/span><\/p>\n

It’s not a matter of error or criticism of those who prefer a packed schedule; every trip serves a different need. It’s simply a different agreement with time: how many places will pass before you, versus how many will manage to become truly yours. <\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps the question isn’t how many places you’ll manage to see. It’s how many of them stayed with you. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
